Helping the People of Haiti

As you probably know by now, Haiti was hit with a devastating earthquake yesterday. Even prior to the earthquake the people in the region have already struggled through years of economic hardship. A while back I participated in a Feed My Starving Children event where we heard stories of families baking mud pies to feed to children because of a lack of food. Yesterday's earthquake pummeled the capital city of Port-au-Prince and there have been reports that most of the major building structures have collapsed (This includes a hospital, UN Headquarters, and Air traffic control tower at the airport to name a few). What can be done today?

1) Pray for the people of Haiti. Pray for relief to come through mission agencies, government agencies, not profits and private individuals. Pray for those who are mobilizing to offer assistance that they will be able to respond rapidly and fully funded to reduce any further casualties in the aftermath.

2) Be informed. It would be hard not to be aware of what is going on, however take some time to read up on Haiti as well as read some quality news sites to find out what is happening.

3) Give Financial support to a relief agency that is currently working and mobilized in Haiti. I just gave an online donation that only took a few minutes to an organization that I respect. If there is an organization that you currently partner with or support regularly and they are on the ground in Haiti then I would recommend finding what they need right now. If not here are a few agencies that I would recommend considering as well:

Bright Hope
World Relief
Red Cross
Mercy Corps

If you know of other respected organizations that are working on the ground in Haiti, please feel free to leave a link to them in the comment section of this post.
